Adobe Readying CS5 Release

Apparently Adobe is getting geared up for the newest revision of its industry-leading Creative Suite, CS5. What’s going to be new? Your guess is as good as mine, but somehow those kids at Adobe always seem to think of something new. I know art boards in Illustrator CS4 complete revolutionized my web design work-flow, and content-aware scaling in Photoshop was one of those things you didn’t know you needed until it existed. So, I’m happy to see what un-asked-for improvements Adobe’s going to spring on me this year so in the future we’ll wonder how we ever lived without those usability options.

And no, I’m not joking. I’ve tried using other image softwares since I settled into CS2. I can’t. Heck, using CS2 now after using CS4 is an exercise in frustration as is.

So, the clock is ticking now until April 12th. Someone grab me some popcorn, would ya?

Nikon Announces 4 New Cameras

OK, so, due to some crazy storms in Indianapolis yesterday we’ve just now regained internet connectivity at Roberts Imaging, and right off the bat I need to catch up on yesterday’s new Nikon point-and-shoot models.

Coolpix S1000PJ

Coolpix S1000PJ

The highlight of the batch is the new Coolpix S1000pj, a 12 megapixel compact with a 5x optical zoom (28-140mm equiv), and Nikon’s 5-Way VR (including a blend of optical and electronic VR, extra high ISO, and Nikon’s Best Shot Selector). Oh, and a built-in projector.

Yup, as in for projecting your pictures onto a wall. Neat stuff, actually, and we’re hoping to get to do another field test with one when it comes out (reportedly next month).

This unique, actually exciting point-and-shoot will be available in Henry Ford’s favorite color (black, that is), and will set you back around $430 when it comes out.

Coolpix S640

Coolpix S640

Up next is the Coolpix S640, which is bacially the S1000pj minus the projector. Actually, it’s almost exactly that. So much exactly that that we’re moving on to the next model down. (The S640 will come in black, red, pink, and white, and set you back about $250)

Coolpix S640

Coolpix S640

The third model announced is the Coolpix S570, which is a further pared down S640 (ditching the optical VR, most notably). Still present are the common threds in all four models: the 12 megapixels and the same 5x zoom. At this point the price is now down to right at $200. Not a bad. (The S570 will come in black, blue, red, and pink.)

Coolpix S70

Coolpix S70

The last model is the upgrade to Nikon’s popular and svelt Sxx series, this time in the form of the Coolpix S70. As mentioned, it sports the same 5x zoom and 12 megapixels of the others, goes back to the full 5-Way VR, and upgrades to a 3.5″ touchscreen for controls.

More interesting than the specs are the color options. It’s available in the rather traditional satin red on red, but then things get wild rather quickly. The other three colors feature metal on one half, and a faux grip on the other. You can pick from black with a black pebbled leather grip, light brown with pebbled champaigne leather, or beige with a surprisingly nice light brown tech grip. It’s hard to describe, actually.

All of these coming, er, soon.

Canon EOS 50D: now with less magenta, corrected tongues

50d-firmwarez

So Canon has released Firmware Version 1.0.7 for the EOS 50D to be available for download from their site here: http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/firm-e/eos50d/firmware.html. According to the official update page:

Firmware Version 1.0.7 incorporates the following changes.

1. Corrects a phenomenon where captured images may tend to appear somewhat magenta depending on the shooting scene.
2. Fixes incorrect indications on the Arabic, Romanian, Spanish, and Ukrainian menu screens.

Firmware Version 1.0.7 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.0.6. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.0.7, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

So there you have it. We again have the 50D body in stock and we’ve got the best legit price around -order it online and you get Free UPS Ground shipping to the (and I love this word) contiguous 48.

Spring Expo

It’s that time of year again!  Today is the big start to the week of the Spring Expo here at Roberts Imaging, culminating in the big Manufacture Representative demo on Friday, April 24 and Saturday April 25.

Got an old camera you want to sell?  Bring it in on Friday and we will buy it from you.  This is at our downtown store only.  We will have folks on hand in the store to buy your gear.

We have several deals going on this week from all the brands, but there are a few standouts.  How about a Nikon Coolpix camera S520 for only $89.97?  It wasn’t too long ago it was selling for $200.  Hurry.  We have a limited stock of them.  A Sony A350 SLR with two Sony lenses and the vertical grip for the camera, all for $799.99!!  And many, many more deals!

There was a misprint in the Indianapolis Star ad that I should mention too.  It shows a Canon G10 for $129.97.  Obviously, to those that know the camera, that was a big mistake.  It should read $449.97.  Sorry about the mistake.  Sometimes that happens.

All In The Family

I’m almost done with the New Nikon Coolpix Camera introductions. At least the ones that have arrived here at your headquarters for Nikon camera sales in Indianapolis, or on the Internet.  We’ve talked about the Nikon Coolpix L-series cameras, the Nikon Coolpix S220 and S230 cameras, and in an earlier blog (The Next Wave; February 19th) I talked up the new Nikon Coolpix S560 cameras.
Now it is time to move up to the next branch of the Nikon family tree. It’s time to look at the Nikon Coolpix S630 cameras.

Canon 5D Mk II Firmware

Canon Digital SLR Camera 5D Mk IISo, I’m sure you all know this already, but the news of the morning is that there’s new firmware for Canon’s hotly anticipated 5D Mk II. Early reports are saying that it does, in fact, fix the by now infamous “black dot” scenario. It also promises correction for occasional vertical banding noise. So, there we go, the new Canon digital SLR camera gets its rough edges knocked off, letting it confidently be viewed as one of the truly great imaging machines going.

Single Digits

Here we are less than a week left before the Holiday. We have most of the popular models in stock still, and incredible deals packages and options.
Did I mention incredible deals? One of our most popular lens shutter cameras this year is a Nikon Coolpix camera the S550. Three popular colors; Plum, Cool Blue and Black are in stock. Plum seems to be the hot color here, in fact I sold 5 of them yesterday. We have the best prices on SD memory cards too, and every camera goes out with one (or more), and as far as digital camera accessories, we have many case and extended warranty deals.
In the digital SLR arena the Canon Digital Rebel cameras are leading the parade. The Canon Rebel XS and XSi packages we have are super. How about a free Canon 75-300 lens with the purchase of a XS kit? That lens is regularly $159.97 and is perfect for getting those shots of the kids or pet in action. We have Nikon Digital SLR deals too, and the amazing Olympus Digital Camera kits. The E-410 package deal has dropped an additional $100.00. That’s what I am hoping to get from my wife next week.
Well Happy Holidays. Here’s hoping you get the perfect sruprises and thoughtful gifts you deserve.

Alternative Technologies

S5 Pro If I were to ask you to tell me what camera I have pictured over to the left, I’d forgive you for answering “The Nikon D200.” I really would. But, it’s actually the Fuji S5, a surprise I ran into myself when reading up on it again.

Fuji wisely built their DSLR off of a mature and developed system, Nikon’s, giving it support for Nikon lenses (like the 18-70 DX pictured) and Nikon flashes (at least through the SB-800).

So, if it looks and works like a Nikon, what makes it different? Super CCD SR ProIn this case, the sensor is the real star. Fuji has developed a highly specialized sensor which reportedly performs very well for reproducing skin tones, and which boasts a capacity for 2 stops more dynamic range than other sensors of similar types. It uses two different pixel types, a large “S” type to provide higher sensitivity, and a smaller “R” type to retain highlight details and provide better dynamic range. With about 6 million of each, it delivers a total of 12 million pixels of resolution while attempting to imitate the color and response of film. Is it for everyone? Not from what I’ve heard, but if you’re shooting weddings and studio work, times where highlight retention and skin tone reproduction matter most, it’s definitely worth the look.

Fuji S5

The boss and I get an email, at the same moment look at each other, and at the same time say, “wow did you see the email on the S5 price drop”, great minds think alike.  In the world of digital SLRs there are few that do better on the colors of skin than the Fuji S5 and it takes all of the great Nikon lenses and Nikon flashes.  It just might be the best way to enter the digital world if you have Nikkor glass, but have yet to purchase a Nikon Digital camera or just need to upgrade to a more professional camera. Wait for it….the new price on the Fuji S5 is $899.97.

Oh yeah, and here is that other great mind, Bruce, our fearless leader.
