So, lots of news all at once. The photo contest has been so popular of late it’s been causing our former host for the blog to groan under the strain. You may have noticed rolling service brownouts. I sure did. So, we’re moving the blog to a new, more stable host (it’s actually here already), but, in the process, some things will be broken until they aren’t. One of those things is the contest itself, ironically. But, I’m going to spend the next week or two getting those back up and going, and rather than have a rushed and short-running theme, we’re just taking June off. You can get some rest, we can get caught up, and we’ll all meet back here in July for a big old awesome contest, right? Right.

October Photo Contest Theme – The Very Edgar Allan Poe

Seriously, did you think the theme would be E. A. Poe and we wouldn't have a bird and the moon as a theme photo?
This month’s Photo Contest theme is a little more accessible, and a little more given to using trochee than last month’s. Good show to everyone who made submissions -abstract ideas are difficult to address in words, let alone photographic images. As I’m reminded each November, trying at all can teach us a lot.
So what was the man known for? He had an indelible effect on Tim Burton (so did Dr. Seuss), and has his own historical society. He was a heckovalot better at prose than H.P. Lovecraft, but nobody seems to be making humorous, plush Tell Tale Hearts. He’s not nearly as obscure as August Strindberg. There was melancholy and the macabre. There was poetry. So much poetry.
Go get yourself his collected works from your local library and read three or four or fifty of his poems and short stories, grab your tripod and your camera bag and reflective vest and hit the streets at dusk. Or hunker down in the part of your house that gives you the willies and focus on the cracks and spiderwebs.
Who was he? A sodden, melancholic fool? Tormented genius? Overhyped hack? Read his words or the words of a biographer and give us all a pair of photos that illuminates a facet of Edgar Allan Poe.
[edit] 10-06-10 – changed “Allen” to “Allan.” Who says we don’t need copy-editors?

New Contest Theme For June
It’s a pretty rare day that I get to put something sexy on our homepage (unless you count the rounded curves of an EOS body, but I don’t swing that way), being the all-ages venue as we are. Which is a bit of an odd compromise, since so much photography is devoted to making things sexy, or glamorous, or what-have-you.
But, I at least got to use this lovely image to illustrate this month’s photo contest theme: feet.
I’m proud of this theme. Feet. It’s pretty open-ended, and it makes you look at mundane things and try to make something spectacular of them. Take a chance, look at things in a new light. And, they’re awkward to compose for, so it’ll make you work on your composition, up your game. Good times.
As always, full details and the link to upload pics available via the external link below (if you’re in a feed you’ll have to click through to the full post).
The Voice of Raw Returns, 40% More Rambling Guaranteed
So, the last couple months were a bit rough around here, and I didn’t have time to pull Nick away from his other duties long enough for us to cut our usual Voice of Raw podcasts. But, it’s the post-Christmas lull right now and we’ve missed the sounds of of our voices as we obstensibly tell you what’s up in the camera world.
So, we’re back…TA-DA!
December’s Photo Contest Winner Official
Congratulations go out to Greg Neubauer, winner of last month’s photo contest theme, “By Candlelight.” For winning, Greg will receive a 16×20″ color print from our Online Photo Lab gratis, as it were.
The theme for this month is “Best of the Decade,” we want your best shot on any topic taken between January 1st, 2000 and December 31st, 2009. The best, most original and technically achieved shot will win this month and be our best of the decade.
And, to make getting us your submissions easier, we’re introducing our new Magic Photo Upload Widget, which you can find on our Monthly Photo Contest Page. No more complicated emailing procedures, just click, upload, and we do the rest. Maybe it isn’t really magic, but it sure is easy.
First Photo Contest of This Decade Celebrates Last
We’ve got our new contest theme up over at our Monthly Photo Contest page, out first of the new decade. And, we decided to use it as an opportunity for you to show off your best work from the last ten years (or 5, of six months, however long you’ve been shooting, so long as you shot it by the end of December 31st, 2009). The theme is open otherwise, so don’t hold back because of subject. We want your best: your best exposed, best composed, most interesting or perfectly timed photos. We want the photos you still look at with pride. Send them on over, and if you win we’ll send you a 16×20″ print of your shot.
Cooliris implemented to massage your eyeballs with our Flickr
Did I say it was easy to embed Cooliris in a page? I did. Guess what, it’s not beneath our fearless webmaster use something sexy and free. Check our monthly photo contest page and our Flickr feed to see this slickery goodness.
If you want in-depth knowledge of how to do this head on over to the Cooliris developer forums or pester us (Derek) in the comments below.
You should also keep an eye on the Robert’s Raw footage videos on our Youtube channel. I hear rumblings from the webmaster implying that he’ll be feeding them into Cooliris as well. Ba-da-BING!
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes…
Oh ok, Mr. Martin brought it to my attention that tomorrow morning is going to be cold and rainy. Well, we’ve done that theme for a Photowalk already (heck, it’s April Showers over at the Monthly Photo Contest on the Robert’s Flickr) and I bought a pack of those happy Optech camera rain covers, so it’s not like I’m unprepared. However, we’re both thinking that Thursday’s forecast looks a lot better and only about 20F warmer.
So we’re rescheduling to Thursday morning. It’ll be nice, I think, to show up in shirtsleeves and even then I’m looking forward to showing up in shorts and sandals in a few more weeks.
