Airplanes are romantic. Bear with me here. First, motorcycles are sexy. Why? Engine roar, shine, and speed. Airplanes are like motorcycles, but they fly. I mean, Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer weren’t pedaling around on tri-cycles and gently floating around in zeppelins in Top Gun, were they?
No. They were in F-14 Tomcats and Cruise rode around on a 1985 Kawasaki Ninja.
In the movie Independence Day Randy Quaid doesn’t blog about how much he hates the aliens because they did invasive medical research on him. No he doesn’t. He flies an F-18 fighter jet right up their…
Seriously. That’s romantic.
We here at Roberts are enamored of airplanes, which is why we’re sponsoring the Indy Air Show Experience at the Indy Air Show on June 7th. $70 (tickets purchased over the phone at 800-726-5544 or in person at the store) gets you admission, parking, lunch and access to pro-lenses and perhaps some of the latest pro bodies. Representatives from Sony, Nikon, Canon, Bogen, HyperDrive, Pelican, and VisibleDust will be in attendance.
Nik software has a new program available now for Adobe Photoshop and Apple Aperture called Silver Efex Pro. This software allows you to convert any image into a beautiful black and white with ease, and give you a look that would normally take you hours in Photoshop to create. You can emulate any number of types of B&W films. Agfa, Kodak, Ilford and many others are represented in the software. Roberts Imaging has this and other Nik programs available now to enhance your inkjet prints on Epson wide format paper or any other photo paper. Nik software has a very similar interface in all of their programs. If you have used the Nikon Capture software with U-Point technology, then you have used Nik software before. Give it a try today.

Since our Indy Airshow Flickr was such a great success, Roberts is now pleased to be running a Monthly Photo Contest over on our main site. For any of you who check this blog instead, here’s the skippy:
Each month we’ll announce a new theme for submissions. You, dear readers, then submit photos for this. We will consider two photos from each person in a contest, and the winning photo will be printed poster size and sent to the photographer. Plus, entrants get the publicity of being seen on our Flickr. Aaand Roberts respects your rights to market, sell, distribute, and otherwise keep the copyright on your photos. It’s a no-lose situation, really.
In honor of Indianapolis hosting the MotoGP for the first time ever, the first theme is motorcycles. So, grab those compact flash cards (or SD memory cards, whichever), grab your camera and go rock the motorcycle scene.
And then send us your best.
Got ideas for future themes? You bet we’d love to hear them. Leave me some in the comments, and I’ll jot’em down.
I hope everyone had a great time at the airshow this year. It was a little too hot but I think the event went well. Although the Blue Angels weren’t there this year, the military jets were a big part of the show. The F-22 Raptor demo was amazing. I uploaded a video on YouTube of the Heritage Flight with the P-51 and the F-22. It was shot with the Sony SR-11 in 1080i. YouTube doesn’t do it justice but check it out anyway! The audio is great. If you were there and want to share your images, click here to send them to us.
So, I was going to do this before now but then I got buried under computer problems, updating our homepage, and Canon’s surprise announcement of the 50D this morning. But, I’ve got a moment now, and I’d like to talk briefly about this past weekend’s airshow experience.
Now, I’d never been to an airshow before, so I’m not nearly as seasoned a voice as Chuck is, and I won’t be talking much here about the show itself (although I will mention that while the F-22s were neat, I vastly preferred the acrobatics of the older showplanes.)
For those of you who somehow missed the details, Roberts was out there by the flightline, and reps from Sony, Nikon, Canon, Bogen, and MAC Group were out there to show off equipment. So, if you’d been dying to try a top-of-the-line Canon digital SLR camera or any Bogen Manfrotto tripods, there were plenty going around.
But, this year’s is over now, and if you missed out, why not check out our new Flickr, freshly loaded with shots from the show? If you did make it out, we’d love to host some of your shots on our Flickr (don’t worry, we don’t want to use them for anything commercial, and you’ll of course retain your copyrights to them.)

In addition to the Raptors there will be the historical ‘War Birds’ again, and Bi-Plane stunt flyers like last year.
The photo to the left is of Team Oracle’s Sean Tucker cutting a ribbon with his wings less than 20 feet from the tarmac. I’ve provided a link to the Team Oracle site and Sean Tucker bio. If you didn’t sign up to attend this year we will most likely be doing next years I recommend it highly.
