Raw Footage and the Sony NEX-5

So, remember that thing, that system that Sony announced recently? You know? yeah? What was it, interchangeable lens compact, tiny body, Alpha sensor, new “E” mount lenses? Ringing any bell? No?

Well, then you probably have no idea why all the hush-hush cloak-and-dagger in this video. Oh well, you should watch it anyway.

And learn.

Executive Panther out.

Sony NEX-5 hands on preview/opinion

I just got my hands on the new Sony NEX-5 camera.  And I like it.  A lot.

This is Sony’s answer to the Panasonic and Olympus micro 4/3 cameras and the answer is huge.  The first thing you notice is the sensor.  It’s a regular APS-C size sensor that you find in most digital SLR’s today.  And it makes a difference.  The low light, high ISO ability is spectacular!  The new Sony E-mount only has a few lenses at this time, but I bet, just like the Micro 4/3 mount, there will be adapters available in no time for all the popular mounts!

Roberts dealing in Boblbee, we got your back

Fine purveyors of quality active gear

So we like bags, here at Roberts. Yes we do. Bags, see, they let you carry more and diverse things than you might with just your hands or a few buckles and straps. Sometimes all you need is a couple of straps and 1/4-20″ screws but other times you’re going to get on a motorcycle, or a bicycle, or a pair of skis and you know what? You’ll want a Boblbee for it.

Boblbee’s Megalopolis Aero line will hold a laptop up to 14″x10″x2″. And to comment on why you’d want to put your laptop in a Boblbee, we’ll refer to the guy who came up with the concept:

For years, Jonas Blanking has left his car at home in favor of his bike or a pair of roller skates to get to work. Always equipped with a backpack to accommodate working notes, sketches, a laptop and some gym wear it bothered him, that on the way, soggy books and an occasionally fractured laptop casing were the result of forgetting what he carried.

New Contest Theme For June

It’s a pretty rare day that I get to put something sexy on our homepage (unless you count the rounded curves of an EOS body, but I don’t swing that way), being the all-ages venue as we are. Which is a bit of an odd compromise, since so much photography is devoted to making things sexy, or glamorous, or what-have-you.

But, I at least got to use this lovely image to illustrate this month’s photo contest theme: feet.

I’m proud of this theme. Feet. It’s pretty open-ended, and it makes you look at mundane things and try to make something spectacular of them. Take a chance, look at things in a new light. And, they’re awkward to compose for, so it’ll make you work on your composition, up your game. Good times.

As always, full details and the link to upload pics available via the external link below (if you’re in a feed you’ll have to click through to the full post).

Welcome to the New Raw!

Alright, so, it’s been up for a day now, and we’ve been tweaking away at it in the background, and now it’s time to officially introduce you to our new blog.

TA-DA!

So, despite the obvious changes (like, it being white), most of it’s the same Raw! you already know and love. But, there are some new things, and some old things we never really explained right that’re worth knowing. So, let’s get going!

Nikon Product Support Pages: 85 Micro and 1001 nights

What to do if you’ve got a D90 and an 18-200 VR II but you want to get closer than 20in to a flower, a grape, or the crud collecting on the charging base of your electric toothbrush? What about that thing, which might be part of your prom keepsake, that your dog just coughed up?

For around five Franklins the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85 f/3.5 ED VR will put you as close as 11 inches to the object whose details you must see at 1.0x magnification. It incorporates Nikon’s VR II technology for a 4 shutter speed advantage over your coffee addiction. You’d do well to toggle it off when you’re working from a tripod, as it’ll incorrectly adjust for no motion. For more reasons why you’d want to use the DX 85, click over to Nikon’s Support page, which is surprisingly amiable.

If you’re a glass buff, a fan of The Decarmeron or Arabian Nights, or just need something to read that isn’t about the iPad or Gerard Butler’s Roman hands, check out “NIKKOR -The Thousand and One Nights,” where Haruo Sato and Kouichi Ohshita chronicle at random the history of NIKKOR lenses.

Panasonic DMC-FX75

A new fisheye wasn’t all Panasonic had up their sleeves today, there’s also this little gem. The LUMIX DMC-FX75 is a 5x wide-angle zoom (starting at 24mm equiv.) with a fancy f2.2 starting aperture (although it slides down to f5.9 on the long end). You’re looking at 14 and change megapixels, and a 3″ touchscreen with touch-to-focus to round out that lens, not a bad compliment.

Panasonic has gotten into a groove of releasing incredibly competent and well-round shooters with good image quality, so, pending hands-on critiques we have no reason to suspect this’ll be anything but an enticing choice at its price point, whatever that might end up being. We’ll give you more word as we know more ourselves.

The Panasonic LUMIX G Fisheye 8mm/F3.5 lens

Panasonic has today announced another lens for the ever growing Micro Four Thirds system: a fisheye. These specialty optics, famous of course for that odd fishbowl distortion and their super extra wide range of viewing. This particular entry sports a 180° field of view. No idea on when it’ll be out yet, but all you fisheye shooters can wait anxiously now.

From the press release:

SECAUCUS, NJ (June 1, 2010) – Today, Panasonic introduced the LUMIX G Fisheye 8mm/F3.5 lens, the H-F008, with a 35mm camera equivalent 16mm lens, the world’s smallest and lightest* digital interchangeable fisheye lens compatible with the LUMIX G Series, DSL Micro (DSLM) cameras.

Featuring a 180-degree diagonal angle view, the LUMIX G Fisheye 8mm/F3.5 lens offers a distinctive perspective and unique deformation effect, creating a creative view for both photos and video. Additionally, its compact size can be attributed to its ten lenses in nine groups, which takes advantage of the Micro Four Thirds system standard to achieve dramatic downsizing.
